Press Release
Sylvia Karp Named Director of Metropolitan Adult Education Program (MAEP)
Sylvia Karp has been named the new Principal/Director of Metropolitan Adult Education Program (MAEP), effective July 1. Karp is currently the assistant principal of MAEP's Erikson center.
Karp replaces Suzi Glass, who has served as MAEP's Director for the past two years. Glass served as MAEP's Principal/Director during a financially difficult time for the Metropolitan Adult Education Program. Glass, who has worked for MetroED for nearly 30 years, has asked for a re-assignment within the Adult Education program and will become Erikson's new assistant principal effective July 1.
"Sylvia Karp has a strong background in educational administration, both at MetroED and in other organizations," MetroED Superintendent Paul Hay, said. "Sylvia has demonstrated her ability to effectively lead programs designed for adults and has current experience managing an MAEP site. She has excellent support from MAEP staff and students, and I am convinced that she will do well in her new position."
MetroED's programs include Central County Occupational Center (CCOC) and Metropolitan Adult Education Program (MAEP). MetroED is a Joint Powers Authority serving students in the Campbell Union High School District, East Side Union High School District, Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District, Milpitas Unified, San Jose Unified, and the Santa Clara Unified District.
Karp has held assistant principal positions in both of MetroED's programs, CCOC and MAEP. She was a CCOC assistant principal from July 2002 until March 2006. Since then, she has served as assistant principal at the MAEP Erikson Center and now looks forward to heading-up the MAEP program.
"As director of MAEP, my goals are to support teachers and students in creating a learning community where excellence in teaching and learning can thrive, to lead the organization in adapting to the changes required in a climate of decreased federal and state funding and to support MetroED in achieving its mission and goals," Karp said.
Karp has more than 25 years of experience in education. Prior to MetroED, Karp was the Director of Educational Services for Heald College for one year; the Dean of Education of Western Career College for five years. She has also served as a college director, academic dean and instructor at Philips Jr. College in Campbell and Parks Jr. College in Denver, Colorado.
MetroED is the largest career-oriented educational organization in Santa Clara County, comprised of high school and adult career technical, academic and community programs.
MetroED annually provides more than 30,000 diverse students with the skills to help them be productive, income-earning and tax-paying contributors to Silicon Valley.
