MetroED to Receive $7 Million in Prop 1D Grants
MetroED has been approved by the State Allocation Board to receive more than $7 million in Proposition 1D funding for modernization and reconfiguration of its Central County Occupational Center (CCOC) facilities. This is the first time that the California Department of Education (CDE) has provided funds for new construction or of career technical education (CTE) facilities.
"These Prop 1D grants will allow us to leverage our funds and invest more than $14 million to modernize CTE programs in seven industry sectors at CCOC,” MetroED Superintendent, Paul Hay, said. “The ultimate beneficiaries will be Santa Clara County high school students who will have the benefit of top of the line CTE facilities and programs. We applaud the Governor and state legislature for recognizing the importance of career technical education, and including regional occupational centers in Proposition 1D for funding."
Statewide, applications for the Proposition 1D CTE grant program were submitted in August 2007 and were scored competitively. Those that scored at least 105 went on to the next step of the funding process with final funding announced on March 26. Districts receiving funds are required to match Prop 1D funds. See the chart below for CCOC’s funding amounts.

“CCOC’s staff is very excited that we were awarded these Prop 1D grants,” CCOC Director, John Fox, said. “This funding will allow us to renovate classrooms with the latest technology available in each of the industry sectors offered at CCOC. This in turn will directly benefit students and allow them the maximum opportunity to succeed in their chosen careers.”
Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2009 and will be staggered to minimize impact on CCOC’s campus, students, and staff. CCOC, a unit of MetroED, is open to high school juniors and seniors from six high school districts: Campbell Union High School District, East Side Union High School District, Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District, Milpitas Unified School District, San Jose Unified School District, and the Santa Clara Unified School District.
There are two grant application cycles for Prop 1D CTE funds. The grants listed above are for cycle one. MetroED has submitted $2.5 million in grant requests for cycle 2. Prop 1D was passed by voters in the November 2006 election. CDE set aside $500 million of Prop 1D funds for funding career technical education facilities.
MetroED is the largest career-oriented educational organization in
Santa Clara County, comprised of high school and adult occupational,
academic and community programs.
MetroED annually provides 50,000 diverse students with the skills
to help them be productive, income-earning and tax-paying contributors to
Silicon Valley.
